The popularity of Green Stamps peaked in the 1960s. At that time, an estimated 80 percent of American households collected them. You could get stamps at supermarkets, gas stations, and department stores.

Competitors like Top Value Stamps and Gold Bond Stamps tried to keep up, but S&H remained the market leader. The company operated roughly 1,200 redemption centers across the country.

The process was simple but time consuming. You had to lick the stamps and stick them into the booklets. It took about 1,200 stamps to fill a standard book. A determined family could fill a book in a month or two of regular shopping.

The 1970s brought economic changes that hurt the stamp business. The oil crisis and high inflation made consumers more price sensitive. Shoppers began to prefer discount stores that offered low prices immediately rather than rewards over time.

Retailers also felt the squeeze. Supermarket margins were thin, and they could no longer afford the 1 to 2 percent cost of the stamp program. In 1989, the United States Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp honoring Green Stamps, but by then the company was in trouble.

Sperry and Hutchinson filed for bankruptcy in 1989. The physical redemption centers slowly closed their doors as the digital age approached.

The spirit of S&H Green Stamps lives on in today's digital loyalty programs. Credit card points, airline miles, and grocery store rewards cards use the exact same principle.
