A Morning Prayer When You're Not Sure What to Say Finding help in prayer when words are hard to come by.

Some years ago, a man wrote to me from a small town in the Midwest. He was struggling to find the right words to say in his morning prayers. He felt like he was just repeating the same old phrases every day, and he wasn't sure if God was even listening. I have found in my own life that this is a common struggle for many people. The Bible says, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Philippians 4:6).

My friend, I want you to know that you're not alone in this struggle. Many people have felt like they don't know what to say in their prayers. But the Bible says, "For we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered" (Romans 8:26). This means that even when we don't know what to say, the Holy Spirit is praying for us and helping us to pray.

I remember a time when I was meeting with a counselor who was working with people who were struggling with addiction. He told me that one of the most important things he did with his clients was to teach them how to pray. He said that many of them had never learned how to pray, and they felt like they didn't know what to say. But he would encourage them to just start talking to God, to tell Him what was on their minds and in their hearts. The Bible says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).

Make no mistake, my friend, prayer is not just about saying the right words. It's about coming to God with a humble and sincere heart. It's about being honest with Him about our struggles and our fears. The Bible says, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you" (James 4:8). Christ is the answer to our struggles in prayer. He is the one who helps us to pray, who gives us the words to say, and who listens to our prayers.

I have found in my own life that the most important thing in prayer is not what we say, but that we say something. The Bible says, "Men ought always to pray, and not to faint" (Luke 18:1). My friend, don't give up on prayer, even when you don't know what to say. Just start talking to God, and let the Holy Spirit help you to pray.
