Words you'll hear

Square knot

The most-used macramé knot, made by tying two outer cords around two center cords, first one way and then the other. It is the backbone of most patterns.

Half hitch

A simple looping knot made by passing one cord over and around another. Worked in rows it creates the diagonal and horizontal lines you see in wall hangings.

Lark's head

The knot used to mount a folded cord onto a dowel or ring at the start of a project, giving you two working cords from one length.

Sennit

A column or chain of the same knot tied over and over, such as a spiral sennit of half knots or a straight sennit of square knots.

Working cord

The cord that does the actual tying, wrapping around the still cords. Knowing which cords are working and which are filler keeps your pattern on track.

Fringe

The loose, often combed-out cord ends left at the bottom of a piece. Trimming and brushing the fringe gives a project its soft, finished look.

Dowel

The wooden rod, branch, or ring you mount your cords onto at the top, which holds the piece together and lets you hang it on the wall.
