• Touching the playing surface with your fingers. The oils leave prints that attract dust and cause crackle, so always hold a record by its edges and label.
• Never cleaning your records. Dust in the grooves sounds like pops and hiss, so brush each record before you play it and deep-clean the dirty ones.
• Storing records flat and stacked. The weight warps the ones underneath, so always stand them upright on a shelf like books.

Words you'll hear

Pressing

A batch of records made from one set of master stampers. A first pressing is from the original run and is often the most prized by collectors.

RPM

Revolutions per minute, the speed a record spins. Most albums play at 33 1/3 RPM and most singles at 45 RPM, so match your turntable's speed to the record.

Cartridge and stylus

The cartridge is the small device at the end of the tonearm that holds the stylus, or needle, which rides in the groove and reads the sound. Styli wear out and should be replaced periodically.

Discogs

A huge online database and marketplace of records. Collectors use it to identify pressings, check real-world values, and buy and sell.

Grading (VG / NM)

A standard shorthand for a record's condition, from Mint down to Poor. Near Mint (NM) looks barely played, while Very Good (VG) shows honest wear at a lower price.

Gatefold

An album jacket that opens like a book, usually with artwork or liner notes inside. Common on double albums and prized special editions.
