Weaving & Loom Craft
Weaving is the quiet, rhythmic craft of lacing yarn over and under to make real cloth, wall hangings, scarves, and rugs with your own two hands. Start with a small frame loom and a ball of yarn, and you will have something beautiful before the afternoon is over.
What you need to start
- A simple frame loom or lap loom to hold the threads
- Yarn in a few colors you like
- A shuttle or tapestry needle to carry the yarn across
- A comb or fork to press each row snug

The Weaver SewsWhy weaving & loom craft is wonderful after 50
Weaving may be one of the most satisfying crafts to pick up later in life. The steady, repeating motion of passing the yarn back and forth is genuinely calming, a little like knitting, and it gives busy hands and mind a gentle focus. You do not need any artistic training or a lifetime of practice, only patience and the willingness to try a row. Best of all, you end up with something real and useful, a scarf, a placemat, a wall hanging, that you made from a simple ball of yarn. It is easy on the budget, easy to do sitting down, and every finished piece is a quiet source of pride you can use, gift, or hand down to your family.
Your first month, week by week
Set up your small frame loom and string the up-and-down warp threads. Then weave a simple coaster or mug rug in plain weave, just over and under, row after row. This one piece teaches you the whole rhythm.
Weave a small wall hanging using two or three colors. Practice keeping your rows even and your side edges straight, and try tying a simple fringe at the bottom when you take it off the loom.
Learn a couple of easy pattern moves, like a soumak twist or a raised loop, to add texture. Mix them with plain weave in the same piece and see how different they feel.
Finish a piece from start to end and hang or use it. Look back at how much steadier your weaving has become, and decide whether to keep exploring frame looms or save toward a larger rigid heddle loom.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pulling the yarn too tight across each row, which draws the sides inward and makes your weaving narrow in the middle.
- Uneven tension, weaving some rows loose and some tight, so the surface looks bumpy and the edges wander.
- Warping the loom too tightly, which makes it hard to pass the yarn through and can even bend a light frame.
- Packing the rows down too hard or too softly, so the cloth ends up either stiff and dense or loose and gappy.
- Not leaving a little slack in a gentle arc before pressing a row down, which is what keeps your edges from pulling in.
- Rushing to a big, complicated project before the simple over-and-under plain weave feels comfortable and automatic.
Make it easier on your body
Simple ways to keep weaving & loom craft comfortable and safe with arthritis, low vision, or limited mobility.
- A lap loom or table loom lets you weave sitting down with the work held at a comfortable height, so you are not bending or reaching.

- Set up under a good, bright task light so you can clearly see the threads without straining tired or low-vision eyes.
- Use easy-grip shuttles and a simple stand or clamp to hold the loom steady, so your hands do the weaving and not the holding.
- Take regular breaks to rest and stretch your arms, shoulders, and hands; weaving should feel relaxing, never like a strain.
- Choose a rigid heddle loom, which needs far less setup and lets you raise and lower whole rows of thread with one easy lever.
Words you'll hear
- Warp
- The threads stretched tight up and down on the loom. They stay still and form the backbone of your cloth.
- Weft
- The yarn you weave side to side, over and under the warp threads. This is the yarn that fills in the fabric.
- Heddle
- A part of the loom that lifts and lowers the warp threads so you can pass the weft through easily instead of by hand.
- Shuttle
- A small tool that holds your weft yarn and carries it back and forth across the warp as you weave.
- Shed
- The temporary opening created between the raised and lowered warp threads, which your shuttle passes through.
- Selvage
- The finished side edges of your weaving. Neat, even selvages are a sign of good, relaxed tension.
- Sett
- How closely the warp threads are spaced on the loom, which decides whether your finished cloth is dense or open.
Where to find your people
- Local weaving guilds, which welcome beginners and often meet monthly to share projects, tips, and looms.
- Fiber-arts groups and spinning-and-weaving circles at senior centers, libraries, and community craft studios.
- Local yarn shops, which frequently host weaving classes, open studio hours, and friendly bulletin boards of nearby weavers.
- Online weaving communities and forums, such as weaving groups on Facebook and Ravelry, where members trade advice and encouragement.
- YouTube, where teachers like Spruce & Linen, Kelly Casanova, and Jane Stafford Textiles walk you through every step at your own pace.
