Understanding Cholesterol
Know your numbers, protect your heart
This is general education, not medical advice. Everyone is different, so always talk with your own doctor before making changes to your health, activity, or medications.
Cholesterol is a fatty substance in the blood that, in excess, can build up in the arteries and raise the risk of heart disease. A simple blood test reveals your levels, and food, activity, and medication can all help keep them in a healthy range.
What you can do
- Have your cholesterol checked as your doctor advises
- Eat more fiber, fish, and healthy fats, and less fried food
- Stay active most days of the week
- Take any prescribed medication as directed
