Why Two Factor Authentication Matters After Age 50
Email often holds the keys to everything else. Once a hacker gets into your Gmail or Outlook they can reset passwords for your bank, Social Security account, or Medicare portal.
The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that business email compromise and email account compromise caused losses of more than 2.9 billion dollars in 2023. People 60 and older lose money to these scams at a higher rate than younger groups according to the FTC.
Two factor authentication works because even if a thief has your password they still need the second factor, usually a code sent to your phone. Google says 2FA blocks 99 percent of automated attacks.
Setting it up now protects years of stored messages, contacts, and financial records that matter to your family. The process takes only a few minutes and most services walk you through every screen.
Gather What You Need Before You Start

Scroll down to the section labeled Signing in to Google and click 2 Step Verification. Google will ask you to sign in again for safety. Next click Get Started and follow the prompts to add your phone number.
Google will send a code to that phone; type it in. Choose whether you want codes sent by text message or through the free Google Authenticator app. The app works even without cell service.
After you verify your phone, Google shows you a list of 10 backup codes. Print or copy them and store them safely. Turn on 2 Step Verification at the end of the screen. You are done.
From now on Gmail will ask for a code each time you sign in from a new device.
Set Up Two Factor Authentication for Outlook and Hotmail
Go to outlook.com or outlook.live.com and sign in with your Microsoft account. Click your picture or circle in the top right and select My Microsoft account. Across the top of the page click Security.
Under Security basics look for Advanced security options and click it. Scroll to Additional security and find Two step verification. Click Set up two step verification then click Next.
Microsoft will walk you through adding a phone number or an authenticator app. Most people choose the Microsoft Authenticator app because it gives you a code without using text messages.
Follow the steps to install the app from your phone store and link it to your account. Microsoft also offers a backup email address option. After you complete the steps you will see a confirmation that two step verification is now on.

Enable Two Factor Authentication for Yahoo Mail
Sign into Yahoo Mail at mail.yahoo.com. Click the profile icon at the top right and choose Account Info. On the left side of the next page click Account security. Scroll down until you see Two step verification and click Turn on.
Yahoo will ask you to verify your current password. Next add a phone number if you have not already done so. Yahoo sends a verification code to that phone. Enter the code to continue.
You can choose text message codes or the Yahoo Account Key which works through the Yahoo Mail app on your phone. Many people pick the Account Key because it does not require typing codes.
