Niels The Terminator FeijenWhy billiards & pool is wonderful after 50
Billiards is a wonderful game to take up after 50. It is social by nature, so a table becomes a gathering spot with friends, family, and new faces at a hall or senior center. It is gentle on the body: there is no running or jumping, just a slow walk around the table and a smooth, unhurried stroke. Success comes from patience, touch, and knowing the angles, not from strength or speed, so your experience is an advantage. It sharpens your focus and geometry sense with every shot, yet stays relaxing and easy to play at your own pace. Best of all, it is a lifelong game you can enjoy for decades, whether on a table at home or out with a friendly league.
Your first month, week by week
Get comfortable at the table. Practice a steady stance, a light grip, and a solid bridge hand, then roll the cue ball softly up and down the table to feel a straight stroke.
Work on pocketing single object balls from short distances. Learn to aim by lining up the contact point, and celebrate clean, unhurried makes.
Learn the rules of 8-ball and play a few friendly games. Start thinking one shot ahead so the cue ball stops in a helpful spot.
Add a gentle follow and draw stroke to move the cue ball forward or back, and practice a simple break. Notice how much calmer and more consistent you already feel.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Gripping the cue too tightly, which stiffens the stroke and throws off aim
- Jumping up out of your stance right as you shoot instead of staying down on the shot
- Shooting without a solid, stable bridge hand to guide the cue
- Hitting the ball too hard when a soft, controlled stroke would pocket it
- Standing in a rushed or off-balance stance instead of settling in comfortably
- Only thinking about the current ball and forgetting where the cue ball will end up
Make it easier on your body
Simple ways to keep billiards & pool comfortable and safe with arthritis, low vision, or limited mobility.
- A mechanical bridge (also called a rake) lets you reach shots across the table without stretching or leaning
- A lighter or slightly shorter cue is easier to handle and control if a full-weight cue feels heavy
- Use the rail for balance and take your time; there is no clock, so settle in before every shot
- Good overhead table lighting makes the balls and pockets far easier to see with low vision
- Bar-height tables and a padded stool let you rest comfortably between shots
- Choose a table at a comfortable height so you are not bending too far to line up your stroke
