Mahjong
Mahjong is a four-player tile game where you build a winning hand from beautifully engraved tiles. The American version is hugely popular with women 50 and over, and it gives you both a fun mental workout and a regular reason to gather with friends.
What you need to start
- A mahjong set with tiles and four racks (American sets include Jokers)
- The current National Mah Jongg League card if you play American style
- Three other players, or a free app to practice on your own
- A table with a little room to spread out and chat

Mahjong is one of the friendliest games you can pick up after 50, and it is especially beloved by women in this age group who turn a weekly game into a treasured social ritual. The game keeps your mind busy in the best way: you are remembering patterns, planning a hand, weighing the odds, and watching what everyone else is doing, which is a wonderful, low-pressure workout for memory and focus. The tiles themselves are a pleasure, smooth and satisfying to handle and shuffle, and that tactile rhythm is part of the charm. Best of all, mahjong is built for four people, so it naturally brings you together with friends week after week, and that steady companionship is as good for your spirits as the game is for your brain.
Your first month, week by week
Get an American mahjong set and the current National Mah Jongg League card. Watch a beginner video to learn the goal of the game and the names of the tiles: Bams, Cracks, Dots, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Jokers. Just get comfortable handling and sorting the tiles.
Learn to read the League card. Practice finding a hand you could build and grouping your tiles to match it. If you do not have three friends yet, play a free app like Real Mah Jongg to get the feel of a turn.
Gather three others and play a slow, friendly first game. Practice the Charleston, the tile-passing round at the start, and take your time picking and discarding. Nobody keeps score yet; the goal is just to finish a hand.
Play a couple more relaxed games and start noticing the discards and any exposed tiles. Try a second hand from the card as a backup plan, and set a regular day to play so it becomes your standing date.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to memorize every hand at once. Just learn to read the card during play; speed comes naturally with time.
- Locking onto one hand too early. Keep two possible hands in mind so you can switch if your tiles do not come.
- Forgetting that Jokers cannot be used in a single or a pair, only in groups of three or more identical tiles.
- Passing or discarding tiles your neighbors clearly need, which hands them the win. Watch what others collect.
- Skipping the Charleston or rushing it. Those tile exchanges are your best early chance to improve your hand.
- Playing only by yourself on an app. Apps are great practice, but the real joy of mahjong is at a table with friends.
Make it easier on your body

- Use tile racks with pushers so the tiles slide out to you and you never have to reach across the table.

- Play online from home through an app like Real Mah Jongg, which is perfect on days when getting out is hard.
- Set up good, glare-free lighting over the table so the engraved tiles are easy to read.
- Sit in a comfortable, supportive chair at a good height, and take a stretch break between games.
- If shuffling is tiring on the hands, use an automatic shuffling mahjong table or ask a tablemate to help mix the tiles.

- Tiles
- The 152 engraved pieces you play with in American mahjong, including suits, honors, Flowers, and Jokers. Building the right group of 14 tiles wins the hand.
- Suits (Bams, Cracks, Dots)
- The three numbered suits, each running 1 through 9. Bams show bamboo, Cracks show Chinese characters, and Dots show circles.
- Charleston
- The tile-passing round at the start of an American game where players pass three tiles right, across, and left to improve their hands before play begins.
- Wall
- The rows of face-down tiles built at the start of the game from which players draw on their turn.
- Pung and Kong
- A Pung is three identical tiles and a Kong is four identical tiles. Many winning hands are built from these matching groups.
- Joker
- A wild tile that can stand in for any tile within a group of three or more identical tiles, but never in a single or a pair.
