In 1960 a first class stamp cost exactly three cents. You could drop a letter in any corner mailbox and trust it would reach your cousin two states away in three or four days.
Families mailed news of new babies, job changes, and weekend plans without a second thought about the price. The United States Post Office Department delivered more than 63 billion pieces of mail that year to a nation of 180 million people.
Rural routes still used horses in a few places until the early 1950s. Those simple blue boxes on street corners were as common as fire hydrants. Today a stamp costs 73 cents and many young people have never bought one.
Looking back at those three cent days reminds us how much our daily habits have shifted and how the postal service once formed the quiet backbone of American life.
The Postage Stamp Timeline
Postage rates remained remarkably stable for most of the 20th century. The price held at three cents from 1932 until 1958. It then rose one cent at a time reaching six cents by 1968 and 10 cents by 1974.
The Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 turned the Post Office Department into the modern United States Postal Service. After that rates climbed faster. By 1981 a stamp cost 18 cents.
The price crossed 30 cents in 1995 and 40 cents in 2006. The forever stamp arrived in 2007 allowing buyers to purchase at the current rate and use the stamp later even after increases.
In 2024 the price reached 68 cents before rising again to 73 cents in July 2025. These steady climbs reflect both inflation and the cost of maintaining 31,000 retail offices and more than 660,000 career employees.
Daily Life Before Email
Before the internet most households checked the mailbox six days a week. The letter carrier often arrived around 10 a.m. in suburban neighborhoods and later on rural routes.
People wrote thank you notes by hand and expected replies within a week. Mail order catalogs from Sears and Montgomery Ward arrived thick as phone books and carried everything from clothing to farm tools.
Utility bills came in the mail and payments went back the same way. Pen pals exchanged letters across oceans that sometimes took three weeks each direction. Children collected stamps from faraway places as a hobby.
The arrival of the daily mail was an event worth pausing for and many families read letters aloud at the supper table.
How Rural Free Delivery Changed the Country
This program helped reduce rural isolation and boosted mail order businesses. It also improved roads because carriers needed passable lanes in all weather. Star routes carried mail by stagecoach or early automobiles in remote areas.
The last horse drawn mail route in the lower 48 states ended in 1950 near Stillwater, Minnesota. These changes knit the country together more tightly than any railroad or highway project of the era.
The Postal Service as Employer
For generations the postal service offered stable jobs with good benefits. In 1970 the agency employed 740,000 workers. Many World War II veterans found second careers as letter carriers or clerks.
The National Association of Letter Carriers formed in 1899 and helped win an eight hour workday in 1910. Civil service rules protected workers from political pressure after scandals in the 1800s.
Today the Postal Service remains one of the largest civilian employers in the federal government with about 640,000 career staff. Retirement pensions and health benefits still draw applicants even as package volume has grown while first class letters have declined.
Collecting Stamps and First Day Covers
Stamp collecting reached its peak in the 1950s and 1960s. The Post Office issued colorful commemorative stamps for statehood anniversaries, famous Americans, and historic events.
Collectors waited in line on first day of issue to get postmarks from the official city. A first day cover with a new 4 cent Lincoln stamp from 1959 might sell for a dime above face value.

Modern Changes and What Remains
Package volume has soared while letter volume dropped from 208 billion pieces in 2001 to about 50 billion in 2024. The agency introduced zip codes in 1963 to speed sorting.
Optical character readers replaced many clerks by the 1980s. Yet the promise of next day delivery for local letters lasted until the 1970s in many cities. Saturday delivery continues for most addresses though some proposals have suggested ending it to save money.
The blue collection boxes have dwindled from more than 400,000 in the 1960s to fewer than 140,000 today. Still the Postal Service delivers to every address in America six days a week, a reach no private company matches.
Mail Volume and Population
| Year | U.S. Population | Pieces of Mail Delivered |
|---|---|---|
| 1960 | 180 million | 63 billion |
| 1970 | 203 million | 85 billion |
| 1990 | 249 million | 166 billion |
| 2000 | 281 million | 208 billion |
| 2024 | 340 million | about 140 billion |
The three cent stamp seems like a bargain from another era yet it bought reliable service that reached every farmhouse and city apartment. While email and texting have replaced many letters, the Postal Service still moves medicine, legal papers, and birthday cards that cannot travel any other way.
For those of us who remember licking the back of a three cent stamp, the lesson is simple. Take time this month to write a short note to a grandchild or old friend and drop it in the mail.
The address may be typed into a phone but the paper in their hand will carry more weight than any screen. A single stamp still buys connection in a world that moves too fast.
