They give you a real reason to gather friends, family, and grandchildren around a table for an evening of laughter instead of screens. The games gently exercise your mind, asking you to plan, count, and outwit, which keeps your thinking nimble and sharp. Best of all, the good ones cross every generation, so a grandchild of eight and a friend of eighty can sit down as equals and have a wonderful time together. It is easy on the body, easy on the wallet, and a genuine antidote to a quiet evening alone.
Your first month, week by week
Pick up one well-loved gateway game such as Ticket to Ride, Azul, or Carcassonne. Watch a how-to video from the lists above once, then play a relaxed practice round on your own to learn the flow before anyone comes over.
Invite one or two friends or a family member for a low-pressure game night. Teach the game slowly, play your first real game, and do not worry about winning. The goal this week is simply to enjoy each other's company.
Try a second style of game, perhaps a cooperative game like Pandemic where you all work together, or a quick card game. Notice which kind you enjoy most, the strategic ones or the lighter, sociable ones.
