The Story

This is where it all began. The 1953 Corvette was Chevrolet's bold experiment — a two-seat American sports car with a revolutionary fiberglass body, unveiled as a Motorama dream car and rushed into limited production. Just 300 were hand-built that first year, every one finished in Polo White over a red interior, making the debut Corvette among the rarest of the breed.

Mechanically it was modest. The 235-cubic-inch 'Blue Flame' inline-six, fitted with three side-draft carburetors, produced 150 horsepower, and the only transmission available was a two-speed Powerglide automatic — no manual could yet handle the output. Purists grumbled, and the 1953 car was more boulevard cruiser than corner-carver, but its lithe styling and open-air charm pointed unmistakably to the future.

Its true significance is historical. The 1953 Corvette planted the seed for what would become America's longest-running and most beloved sports car. Without this fragile, hand-laid first effort, there would be no fuel-injected '57, no Sting Ray, no modern mid-engine icon.

For collectors the 1953 is the holy grail of Corvettes. With only 300 made and far fewer surviving, well-documented cars routinely bring well over a quarter of a million dollars, and the finest examples have crossed the million-dollar mark. It is the cornerstone of Corvette history.
