The Story

The 1957 Corvette is the car that turned a pretty roadster into a genuine performance machine. With the new 283-cubic-inch V8 and Rochester's Ramjet fuel injection, Chevrolet became the first American manufacturer to reach the magic figure of one horsepower per cubic inch — 283 horsepower from 283 cubic inches. Overnight, the fiberglass two-seater could trade blows with Europe's finest.

To drive a fuel-injected '57 is to feel a sports car shedding its training wheels. Road & Track recorded zero to sixty in 5.7 seconds and a top speed beyond 130 mph — figures that humbled costlier exotics. Paired with the optional four-speed manual and a close-ratio rear axle, the little Chevrolet felt eager and alive, its crisp throttle response a revelation in an era of soft, carbureted cruisers.

It arrived at exactly the right cultural moment. America in 1957 was confident, prosperous and besotted with chrome, jet styling and speed. The Corvette, with its toothy grille, cove-sided flanks and whitewall tires, became a rolling emblem of that optimism, and a fixture of weekend sports-car racing where privateers gave it a fearsome competition record.

Today the 1957 fuelie sits among the most coveted of all first-generation Corvettes. Only a fraction of the 6,339 cars built that year left the factory with fuel injection, and well-documented examples now command six figures at auction. It remains a milestone — the moment the Corvette grew up.
