The 1968 Mustang GT Fastback is forever linked to one moment: Steve McQueen hurling a Highland Green example through the streets of San Francisco in the film 'Bullitt.' That single chase cemented the fastback's place in pop-culture history.
Beneath the cool image was real muscle. The top S-code option was the 390 cubic-inch FE big-block V8, rated at 325 horsepower and a stout 427 lb-ft of torque. Bolted to a four-speed manual, it could run from rest to 60 mph in around six seconds, quick numbers for a comfortable, civilized GT.
Visually, 1968 brought a subtle refresh of the 1967 redesign: cleaner side scoops, revised badging, federally mandated side-marker lights and a new energy-absorbing steering wheel. The GT package added fog lamps, rocker stripes, special wheels and disc brakes, giving the fastback genuine presence.
Relatively few 1968 Mustangs left the factory with the 390, which makes a genuine S-code GT fastback a coveted find. Add the enduring 'Bullitt' mystique and it is no surprise these cars sit among the most desirable classic Mustangs of all.
