The Story

By the mid-1980s the Ford Mustang had survived a rocky transition into the lightweight Fox-body era, and the GT had become America's affordable performance hero. For 1986, the 5.0-liter V8 gained sequential electronic fuel injection, a long-runner intake, and a roller camshaft, finally taming the temperamental carbureted and early-injected setups that came before.

The payoff was a flexible 200 horsepower and a broad torque curve that made the GT genuinely quick for its price. A 0-60 sprint of roughly 6.8 seconds embarrassed pricier imports, and the five-speed manual and live rear axle delivered the kind of rowdy, tire-smoking character that defined the breed.

Buyers could choose the sleek aero-nose hatchback or the open-air convertible, both wearing the GT's ground effects, fog lights, and rear spoiler. With a sticker around ten thousand dollars, the Mustang GT undercut nearly everything that could keep pace with it, cementing its status as the working person's muscle car.

The 1986 model was the last before the 1987 restyle, giving it a distinct place in Fox-body history. Long treated as cheap fun, clean originals are now climbing in value as a new generation rediscovers the 5.0's charm. The Fox-body GT remains one of the defining performance bargains of the 1980s.
