The Story

For most of the 1980s the Corvette was fast but never truly exotic. That changed in 1990 with the ZR-1, a Corvette engineered to take on Ferrari and Porsche on their own terms. The secret lived under its subtly widened rear bodywork: a brand-new engine unlike anything Chevrolet had built before.

The LT5 was a 5.7-liter V8 designed with Lotus and hand-assembled by Mercury Marine. Where every other Corvette used a pushrod motor, the LT5 had four overhead camshafts and 32 valves, spinning to a screaming redline and making 375 horsepower. A valet key even let owners lock out the upper power range to tame the car for less experienced drivers.

All that exotic hardware made the ZR-1 expensive. At $58,995 it cost nearly twice as much as a base Corvette, and only 3,049 were sold in that first year. Magazines clocked it from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds and verified a top speed near 180 mph, numbers that genuinely embarrassed pricier European rivals.

Nicknamed the King of the Hill, the C4 ZR-1 proved an American sports car could match the world's best with real engineering, not just cubic inches. Long overlooked by collectors, these special Corvettes are finally being recognized as the 1990s milestones they always were.
