The Story
When Gordon Murray sketched the McLaren F1, he refused to chase a number on a spec sheet. He wanted the finest driver's car ever built, and he got it almost by accident: the world's fastest production car for nearly three decades. There was no turbocharging, no all-wheel drive, no electronic crutches. Just a featherweight carbon-fibre tub, a screaming BMW V12, and a driver seated dead-center like a fighter pilot.
BMW Motorsport delivered the 6.1-litre S70/2 V12 making 618 horsepower, so potent that Murray famously had the engine bay lined with gold foil to manage the heat. The car weighed barely 1,140 kilograms. The result was savage and pure: zero to sixty in 3.2 seconds and, in 1998, a record 240 mph run that stunned the automotive world.
Only 106 examples ever left Woking, and many became racing legends. In 1995 a near-stock F1 GTR won the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright, humbling purpose-built prototypes. That single victory cemented the F1's reputation as a machine that was untouchable on road and track alike.
Today the McLaren F1 is the blue-chip collectible of the modern era, with road cars valued around twenty million dollars. For anyone who remembers reading the road tests in the 1990s, it remains the high-water mark of analog supercar engineering, a car built before computers smoothed away every thrill.
