The Story
The 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee did not creep into the world quietly. It literally crashed into it, when Chrysler drove a prototype straight up the steps of Detroit's Cobo Hall and through a plate-glass window to debut the ZJ at the 1992 auto show. It was a fitting entrance for a vehicle that helped invent the modern luxury SUV.
Underneath the handsome bodywork sat the bulletproof 4.0-litre AMC inline-six, making 190 horsepower and an honest reputation for running forever. Unlike the boxy utility rigs that came before, the Grand Cherokee paired full-time Quadra-Trac four-wheel drive with car-like comfort, a quiet cabin, and available leather and power everything.
The motoring press took notice immediately. Motor Trend named it Truck of the Year for 1993, and buyers responded by the hundreds of thousands. The Grand Cherokee proved that a family could have genuine off-road capability without sacrificing the refinement they expected from a sedan.
Three decades on, clean first-generation ZJ models remain affordable classics, often trading around eleven thousand dollars. For the 50-plus crowd it is a powerful memory machine, the vehicle that took the kids to soccer practice and the family to the mountains, all while quietly reshaping what Americans expected from a sport-utility vehicle.
