The Story

If the original Viper roadster was a brutal throwback, the 1996 Dodge Viper GTS coupe was its glorious refinement. Painted in iconic blue with twin white stripes and crowned by a distinctive double-bubble roof, it became one of the most instantly recognizable American performance cars ever made.

The double-bubble roofline was not just for show; those raised sections gave helmeted track drivers extra headroom. Beneath the long hood sat a thunderous 8.0-litre V10 making 450 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque, routed through a six-speed manual to the rear wheels. It hurled the GTS to sixty in around 4.2 seconds.

Dodge claimed more than ninety percent of the GTS was new compared to the roadster, adding real amenities like air conditioning, power windows, a proper stereo, and dual airbags. The coupe was civilized enough to drive every day, yet still wild enough to terrify the unprepared.

Just over a thousand GTS coupes were built that first year, and the model went on to dominate GT racing, winning at Le Mans and Daytona. Clean examples now trade north of seventy thousand dollars. For those who lusted after one new, the blue-and-white GTS remains the definitive shape of nineties American muscle.
