Drafted fourth overall by the Chicago Bears in 1975, Payton broke out in 1976 with 1,390 rushing yards. He reached superstardom in 1977, when he rushed for a then-record 275 yards in a single game and swept the NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards. 'Sweetness' became the heart of the Bears franchise for 13 seasons.

Born in Columbia, Mississippi, Payton starred at Jackson State, where he set college scoring records. The Bears made him the fourth overall pick in the 1975 NFL Draft.
Over 13 seasons Payton combined power, speed, and durability, never missing games despite carrying the Bears' offense. He famously refused to run out of bounds, preferring to deliver hits to defenders.
He finally won a championship with the dominant 1985 Bears in Super Bowl XX. His death from cancer in 1999 at age 46 stunned the sports world and cemented his beloved legacy.
