Acrylic & Oil Painting
Painting lets you slow down, lose track of time, and end the afternoon with something you made with your own hands. You don't need talent to start, only a few brushes and a willingness to play.
What you need to start
- A starter set of acrylic paints in a few basic colors
- Two or three brushes and a canvas panel or pad
- A flat surface, good light, and a jar of water for cleanup
- Patience with yourself while you learn the feel of the paint

Your learning path
Three stages, taken at your own pace. Start at the top, get comfortable, then move down as you grow. There is no rush, and no wrong place to begin.
Acrylics are the friendliest place to start: they dry fast, clean up with water, and forgive your mistakes. These four lessons cover your supplies, mixing color, handling a brush, and finishing your very first painting.

Tim Packer Fine ArtsWhy acrylic & oil painting is wonderful after 50
Painting rewards exactly what these years give you: time, patience, and a lifetime of things worth looking at closely. There is no audition and no wrong way to do it. The repeated, gentle motion of a brush is calming, and choosing colors keeps your eyes and mind engaged. Acrylics let you start today with almost no setup, and oils give you a slower, richer practice when you are ready. Many people find painting becomes a quiet daily ritual that lowers stress, and the finished pieces make heartfelt gifts. Best of all, every painting you make is one more skill you did not have before.
Your first month, week by week
Set up a small space with good light. Open your acrylics and just play, mixing colors and trying brushstrokes with no goal.
Follow one beginner video all the way through and finish a simple painting, even if it looks rough. Finishing matters more than perfect.
Paint the same simple subject a second time. Notice what felt easier and where you want more control.
Try painting from a photo you love, or sample a small oil study. Hang your favorite piece where you will see it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying too many supplies before you have painted anything; a small starter set is plenty
- Mixing your paint with too little water or too much, which makes colors streaky or weak
- Letting acrylics dry on the brush; rinse often so bristles do not stiffen and ruin
- Overworking a painting instead of stopping while it still looks fresh
- Comparing your first attempts to finished gallery work instead of to last week
- Skipping a base layer or sketch and getting lost halfway through the painting
Make it easier on your body
Simple ways to keep acrylic & oil painting comfortable and safe with arthritis, low vision, or limited mobility.
- Use a tabletop easel or a sit-down easel so you can paint comfortably while seated
- Add ergonomic or chunky brush grips, or wrap handles with foam, to ease arthritic hands
- Set up a daylight lamp and a magnifier so you can see colors and fine detail clearly
- Choose acrylics for easy water cleanup, or odorless oils, so you avoid strong fumes
- Work larger with bigger brushes and canvases to reduce fine-motor strain on your hands
- Pick a palette with a thumb hole or built-in support so it is steady and light to hold
