Falls are one of the biggest risks to staying independent, and the good news is that better balance can be practiced. A few simple exercises plus some easy changes around the house can lower your risk a great deal.
What you can do
- Practice standing on one foot near a counter for support
- Try gentle tai chi or balance classes made for seniors
- Remove loose rugs and clutter, and add night lights
- Keep often-used items within easy reach to avoid stretching
