Required Minimum Distributions — what the IRS says you must withdraw from retirement accounts each year.
Federal RMD only. Some employer plans require RMDs from each plan separately (you can't aggregate 401(k)s like you can IRAs). Roth IRAs have no RMDs during your lifetime (Roth 401(k)s lost their RMDs starting 2024 under SECURE 2.0). Inherited IRA rules changed: most non-spouse beneficiaries must drain the account in 10 years. Talk to your plan administrator if you have multiple plans.
