Back to the full guide

1. Gather your supplies

  • A few coin folders or albums to organize your collection
  • A magnifier or loupe to read dates and mint marks
  • Acid-free 2x2 holders or flips to protect your coins
  • A current price guide such as the Red Book

2. Your first project

Buy a Lincoln cent folder and fill as many slots as you can from your pocket change and a few rolls of pennies from the bank.

3. Your first month, step by step

  • Week 1: Pick up an inexpensive Lincoln cent folder and a simple magnifier, then start sorting the loose change around your house by date.
  • Week 2: Buy a few rolls of pennies from your bank and fill as many folder slots as you can, learning where mint marks sit on each coin.
  • Week 3: Read a beginner guide or the Red Book, learn the difference between a key date and a common date, and set a small focus for your collection.
  • Week 4: Visit a local coin shop or a coin club meeting, ask questions, and pick up a few protective 2x2 holders for your favorite finds.

4. Mistakes to avoid

  • Never clean your coins; cleaning destroys value and is the number one beginner mistake.
  • Touching a coin's face instead of holding it by the edges, which leaves fingerprints and oils that cause damage over time.
  • Storing coins in PVC plastic flips, which slowly leak a green slime that ruins the surface; always use archival-safe, PVC-free holders.
  • Overpaying for raw coins online from sellers you don't know, when many fakes and altered coins are out there.
  • Buying expensive coins before you've learned to grade, so you can't tell a good deal from a bad one.
  • Chasing every shiny coin instead of picking a focus, which makes a collection scattered and frustrating.
