Embroidery & Cross-Stitch Starter Checklist
Everything you need to begin embroidery & cross-stitch, on one page. Print it, check off each step, and enjoy the journey. Made for beginners over 50.
1. Gather your supplies
- An embroidery hoop
- Aida cloth or cotton fabric
- A skein or two of embroidery floss
- An embroidery needle and small scissors
2. Your first project
Stitch a small flower or your first initial inside a 6-inch hoop using just two or three colors.
3. Your first month, step by step
- Week 1: Gather a hoop, some Aida cloth or cotton, a few colors of floss, a needle, and small scissors. Watch the beginner basics video, then simply practice threading the needle and making a running stitch and a backstitch across a scrap. No project yet, just getting comfortable.
- Week 2: Learn to separate your floss into strands and tighten your fabric in the hoop. Stitch a simple straight line, a curve, and a filled shape. Try a satin stitch to fill a small heart or leaf. Mistakes are normal and easy to pull out, so relax and experiment.
- Week 3: Start your first real little project: a single flower or your initial inside the hoop using two or three colors. Add a French knot for a flower center and a backstitch outline. Work in short sessions and set it aside whenever your hands want a rest.
- Week 4: Finish that first hoop and back it neatly so it is ready to hang or gift. Look back at your Week 1 scrap and notice how much steadier your stitches have become. Pick your next small pattern, and consider sharing a photo with an online stitching group.
4. Mistakes to avoid
- Using all six strands when the pattern wants two or three. Check the key and separate your floss for cleaner, flatter stitches.
- Fabric too loose in the hoop. Re-tighten the screw and gently tug the edges so it is drum-tight, which makes every stitch easier.
- Thread that knots and tangles. Work with shorter lengths, about the distance from your hand to your elbow, and let the needle dangle to un-twist it.
- Carrying dark thread behind light fabric. It shows through, so end and re-start nearby instead of dragging the thread across the back.
- Pulling stitches too tight and puckering the fabric. Let each stitch sit gently on the surface rather than yanking it through.
- Starting a big, detailed pattern first. Begin with something small you can finish, so you feel the reward and stay motivated.
