Macramé Starter Checklist
Everything you need to begin macramé, on one page. Print it, check off each step, and enjoy the journey. Made for beginners over 50.
1. Gather your supplies
- A few balls of macramé cotton cord, 3mm or 4mm to start
- A wooden dowel, ring, or sturdy hook to anchor your work
- A pair of sharp scissors and a tape measure
- A comb and a little patience for the fringe
2. Your first project
Tie a small plant hanger or a keychain using just the square knot and the lark's head knot, and you will have something to show off in an afternoon.
3. Your first month, step by step
- Week 1: Gather a ball of 4mm cotton cord, a dowel, and scissors. Watch the supplies and basic-knots videos, then simply practice the lark's head knot to mount cords on the dowel and tie a row of square knots across a scrap. No project yet, just getting your hands comfortable.
- Week 2: Learn the half hitch and the spiral knot. Try alternating your square knots to make a net pattern. Keep your tension even and relaxed. If a knot looks wrong, just untie it and try again, because the cord forgives everything.
- Week 3: Start your first real little project: a simple plant hanger or a keychain using the lark's head and square knots. Work in short sessions, hang the piece at a comfortable height, and set it aside whenever your hands want a rest.
- Week 4: Finish that first piece, trim and comb the fringe, and hang it up. Look back at your Week 1 scrap and notice how much steadier your knots have become. Pick a small wall hanging for next, and consider sharing a photo with an online macramé group.
4. Mistakes to avoid
- Tying with uneven, inconsistent tension, which makes the knots look lumpy. Keep an easy, steady pull on every knot so the rows match.
- Miscounting your cords at the start, so the pattern does not line up. Count twice, and mark the center cord with a little piece of tape.
- Cutting the cord too short. Macramé eats up far more length than you expect, so measure generously, usually four to six times the finished length.
- Mixing up the square knot and the half hitch. They look similar at first, so practice each one slowly until your hands know the difference.
- Pulling knots too tight, which puckers the work and tires your hands. Let each knot settle gently into place instead of yanking it.
- Starting with a big, complicated pattern. Begin with a small plant hanger or keychain you can actually finish, so you feel the reward.
