Everything you need to begin puzzles & crosswords, on one page. Print it, check off each step, and enjoy the journey. Made for beginners over 50.

Back to the full guide

1. Gather your supplies

  • A pencil with a good eraser (skip the pen at first)
  • Puzzle books or a free puzzle app on your phone or tablet
  • Good light and a comfortable place to sit
  • A little patience and curiosity, which you already have

2. Your first project

Finish one easy crossword or one easy sudoku from start to finish, in pencil, without rushing.

3. Your first month, step by step

  • Week 1: Pick one type to start, an easy crossword or an easy sudoku. Work it in pencil, take your time, and simply finish one puzzle from start to end. That first completed grid is your win.
  • Week 2: Build a daily habit of 15 to 30 minutes. Try a different type, perhaps a jigsaw or a word search, so you learn which puzzles you enjoy most. Watch a beginner video above for tips when you get stuck.
  • Week 3: Move up one notch in difficulty in your favorite type. Learn one new technique, like scanning for the easy clues first in a crossword or spotting a 'naked single' in sudoku, and use it on every puzzle.
  • Week 4: Mix it up: a crossword one day, sudoku the next, a logic puzzle on the weekend. Notice how much faster and calmer you feel than in Week 1, then pick the type you love most to keep growing.

4. Mistakes to avoid

  • Solving in ink instead of pencil when you are new. Use a pencil with a good eraser so a wrong guess never ruins the whole grid.
  • Forcing an answer you are not sure of. If a word feels shaky, leave it blank and come back, rather than building more mistakes on top of it.
  • Ignoring the crossing letters. Every letter you fill in helps the answers that cross it, so always use those shared letters as clues.
  • Not starting with the easy clues. Fill in the answers you are sure of first to open up the grid, then tackle the harder ones.
  • Trying to finish in one sitting and getting frustrated. Put a tough puzzle down and come back later, fresh eyes solve clues that felt impossible.
  • Buying puzzles that are too hard at the start. Begin with easy or large print books and move up only when they feel comfortable.
