Back to the full guide

1. Gather your supplies

  • A basic hand saw
  • A measuring tape and pencil
  • Sandpaper and wood glue
  • A few clamps

2. Your first project

Build a simple wooden box or a small shelf using glue and a few screws.

3. Your first month, step by step

  • Week 1: Set up a small, safe work space and gather a few basics: a tape measure, a square, a pencil, a hand saw, and some clamps. Watch the beginner tool video and practice measuring, marking, and making straight cuts on scrap wood. Do not buy expensive machines yet.
  • Week 2: Learn to cut to a line and sand smooth. Practice marking with a square and cutting just outside your line, then sanding to the mark. Get comfortable with safety habits: eye and ear protection, and keeping fingers clear of the blade.
  • Week 3: Build your first real project, a simple cutting board or a small box. Glue boards together, clamp them flat, and let the glue dry fully. This teaches gluing, clamping, and patience all at once.
  • Week 4: Finish your project. Sand through the grits, then apply a food-safe oil or a wipe-on finish. Step back and admire something you made with your own hands, then plan your next, slightly bigger build.

4. Mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring once and cutting right away. Measure twice, mark with a sharp pencil and a square, then cut. A wrong cut wastes wood and time, and you cannot un-cut a board.
  • Tear-out, where the wood splinters as the blade or router exits. Use sharp blades and bits, back up the cut with a piece of scrap, and on a router take light passes and feed in the correct direction.
  • Gluing a joint without a dry-fit first. Always assemble the whole project without glue first (a dry-fit). Check that everything lines up and you have enough clamps within reach before you ever open the glue bottle.
  • Skipping safety gear or rushing. Wear safety glasses and hearing protection every time, remove loose sleeves and jewelry, and never reach over a moving blade. Slow down; the wood is not going anywhere.
  • Sanding too little or skipping grits. Work up through the grits in order (for example 80, then 120, then 180, then 220). Skipping grits leaves scratches that only show up after you apply a finish.
  • Rushing the finish. Apply thin coats, let each one dry fully, and sand lightly between coats. Thick, hurried coats stay tacky, trap dust, and look cloudy.
