First, add moving water. The sound of a simple dripper or a small fountain pulls in birds that a feeder never will, including ones that don't eat seed at all. Second, if you only buy one food, make it black oil sunflower seed. The shells are thin and the seeds are rich, so they attract the widest range of backyard birds. Third, place a shrub or small tree within about 10 feet of the feeder. Birds need a quick escape nearby and they simply won't visit a feeder that feels exposed.
