One, skip the report card questions. Instead of how school ask what they're into right now, a game, a song, a video. Let them be the expert and teach you. Teens open up when they get to lead. Two, send a quick text or a short message now and then. A funny photo, a happy birthday, a good luck on the game. A few words on their phone often lands better than waiting for a long sit -down talk. Three, share an activity instead of a face -to -face chat. Cook, fish, build, or play a game side -by -side. Talk flows easy when you're both busy with your hands and nobody feels put on the spot.
