3 Steps to Organize Decades of Family Photos (Without the Overwhelm)

Sort by decade, scan the keepers with a free app, and back up in two places. Three steps to organize a lifetime of photos.

What you'll learn

  1. Sort by decade. One. Don't sort one photo at a time. Make a pile for each decade, the sixties, the seventies, and so on, and toss every picture into its pile fast. Rough order first. You can fine-tune later, and you'll actually finish.
  2. Scan the keepers. Two. Scan the keepers with a free phone app. It snaps each photo flat and crops it for you. Aim for one good box a week, not the whole closet in a day, so it never feels like a chore.
  3. Back up twice. Three. Once scanned, save them in two places. Keep one copy on the computer and one in the cloud or on a small drive. A flood or a crash can wipe out one copy, never both.
