CBP San Diego seizes about 67 million dollars in drugs across July busts

Tuesday, August 18, 2026 · 2 sources

Customs and Border Protection officers in the San Diego Field Office seized 8,359 pounds of narcotics during 144 smuggling attempts in July, DHS said. The haul included 553 pounds of fentanyl and carried an estimated street value of about 67 million dollars.

SAN DIEGO - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in San Diego seized more than 67 million dollars in illegal drugs during July enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security said.

Officers with the San Diego Field Office, which covers seven ports of entry on the California-Mexico border, reported 8,359 pounds of narcotics taken during 144 smuggling attempts between July 1 and July 31. DHS put the estimated street value at 67 million dollars.

The month totals included 553 pounds of fentanyl, 36 pounds of heroin, 2,572 pounds of cocaine, and 5,077 pounds of methamphetamine, according to figures carried by Fox News and local affiliates. Sidney Aki, CBP San Diego director of field operations, said the seizures reflect daily work to keep dangerous drugs out of U.S. communities.

Earlier this month, officers at the San Ysidro Port of Entry found about 16 pounds of fentanyl, valued near 240,000 dollars, hidden in an electric moped driven by a 22-year-old Mexican citizen, DHS said. Separate reporting noted recent weapons interdictions as well, including a rocket-propelled grenade launcher tube and rifles stopped while heading toward Mexico from Arizona.

The July San Diego totals sit inside the Trump administration border enforcement push. Fentanyl remains a leading cause of overdose deaths in the United States, and port seizures are one measure of interdiction volume rather than a full picture of drugs that still get through.

DHS framed the numbers as evidence of sustained officer vigilance at busy Southern California crossings. Individual case prosecutions continue separately from the monthly poundage reports.

How much was seized?

CBP reported 8,359 pounds of drugs in July at San Diego ports during 144 smuggling attempts, with an estimated street value of about 67 million dollars.

How much fentanyl was in the haul?

Officers seized 553 pounds of fentanyl in the July totals, along with large amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine and a smaller amount of heroin.

Which ports are covered?

The San Diego Field Office includes seven ports of entry along the California-Mexico border, including San Ysidro.

Does this stop all trafficking?

No. Seizure totals show what officers catch. They do not measure every shipment that still enters the country.

Why does this matter nationally?

Fentanyl drives many U.S. overdose deaths. Large port seizures remove product from the street supply and support broader border enforcement.
