NATO Jet Shoots Down Drone Over Romania Near Ukraine Border

Romania's defense ministry said Sunday that a NATO fighter jet shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace near the borders with Ukraine and Moldova.
The ministry said the drone came from Moldova and was intercepted early Sunday by a Spanish F-18 jet assigned to NATO duties. Debris fell in an unpopulated area near the Ukrainian border, the ministry said, according to CBS News.
NATO spokesperson Marty O'Donnell said the drone appeared to be Russian. He called it the fourth successful shootdown of a drone over Romanian airspace by NATO aircraft. The operation was coordinated through NATO's Combined Air Operations Centre at Torrejon, Spain, he said.
Incidents of this kind have become more common as the war next door continues. Authorities have found drone fragments on Romanian soil several times since 2023 after Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports along the Danube. In some cases, officials say electronic warfare can send drones off course, and in others a Ukrainian drone may be "hijacked" by Russian systems.
Last week, Ukraine denied targeting Bulgaria after a drone entered Bulgarian airspace and exploded near an international gas pipeline after crossing from Romania. Last month, Romania shot down a drone for the first time since Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion, after one entered airspace about 60 miles from Bucharest. In June, Latvia said two NATO jets downed a drone over its territory.
NATO members on the alliance's eastern edge treat these intercepts as airspace defense, not a direct entry into the Ukraine war. Still, each shootdown raises the risk of miscalculation if debris or a misfired weapon hits people or critical infrastructure.
Romania did not report casualties from Sunday's intercept. The alliance will continue air-policing rotations while the wider air war between Russia and Ukraine shows no sign of slowing.
