Why this helps: Boredom is a low-arousal, low-interest, high-disengagement state; novel or engaging stimuli release dopamine and norepinephrine, and when those drop, attention cannot be sustained and drowsiness follows (Nature Communications work on the nucleus accumbens summarized by Neuroscience News, 2017). EEG studies show increased low-frequency theta and alpha activity during monotonous input, signaling drift toward sleep onset (sleep-onset EEG review, PMC, 2022). A genuinely dull, eventless reading withholds the novelty that keeps the mind alert, which is the entire mechanism this feature relies on.

Concept (intro card shown the first time)

Header: On purpose, nothing happens.

Body:
Most stories are built to hold your attention. This one is built to release it. A flat voice reads something with no plot, no tension, and nowhere it is trying to take you, because a mind with nothing to chase tends to let go. The reading does not build to anything. It just continues, evenly, until you are no longer listening. That is the design working, not failing. Press play, let it run, and do not try to follow along.

Button: Begin the dull reading
Secondary link: What is this?

Sample monotone passage (~250 words) — "The Filing of Documents"

A document, once received, is placed in the inbound tray on the left side of the desk. The inbound tray is a shallow rectangular tray, and it holds documents until they are processed. Processing begins by removing the topmost document from the tray. The document is turned so that the printed side faces upward. If the printed side already faces upward, no turning is required, and the document remains as it is.

Each document has a reference number in the upper corner. The reference number is read from left to right. The first two digits indicate the year. The next three digits indicate the sequence. The remaining digits, if any, indicate the revision. Documents with no revision digits are treated as the first version. Documents are filed in order of their reference number, lowest first.

The filing cabinet has four drawers. The drawers are numbered one through four, from top to bottom. Each drawer contains folders. Each folder is labeled with a range of reference numbers. To file a document, the correct drawer is opened, and the correct folder is located by reading the labels in order until the range that contains the document is found. The document is then placed inside the folder, behind any documents already present, so that the contents remain in order.

When the document has been filed, the drawer is closed. The next document is taken from the inbound tray. The process repeats. There is no need to hurry. Each document is handled the same way. When the inbound tray is empty, the filing is complete for now.

Build notes

Narration target: flat affect, minimal pitch variation, slightly slower than conversational pace, no music bed or only a low neutral drone.

No sound effects, no dramatic pauses, no rising intonation at list items.

Loopable: the passage may repeat from the top without a chime or break, since waking the listener defeats the purpose.

Sources

Neuroscience News, "Why Do We Fall Asleep When We're Bored?" 2017 — nucleus accumbens / dopamine drop link between boredom and sleep onset (Nature Communications source study).

"Changes during the sleep onset process on EEG activity and the components of attention," PMC, 2022 — theta/alpha increase and falling alertness as attention disengages near sleep onset.
