Why this helps: A 2025 randomized experiment (Owens et al., *Ecopsychology* / Sage) found nature-based guided imagery significantly improved mental well-being and reduced depressive symptoms; a 2024 study reported nature-based guided imagery lowered state anxiety more than urban imagery. Guided imagery also lowered heart rate and galvanic skin response in a 2024 comparison study. This journey uses water and green-pasture imagery from **Psalm 23, King James Version** (translation_id confirmed "kjv", quoted exact).

Let yourself settle. You are about to take a short journey, and you do not have to go anywhere — your body stays right here, resting. Only your imagination travels. [pause]

Close your eyes. Take one slow breath in. [pause] And let it out, longer, like setting down something heavy. [pause] Again. In. [pause] And a long way out. [pause]

We begin with the words that have steadied tired hearts for three thousand years. "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." [pause] Let that be the ground under your feet for the next few minutes. You are not abandoned. You are led. [pause]

Picture a wide green field at the gentle end of the day. The grass is soft and deep. "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures." So lie down here, in your mind. Feel the cool grass take your weight. There is nowhere you need to be. [pause]

The light is golden and low. A warm breeze moves across the field and over your face. [pause] Your shoulders sink into the earth. Your hands fall open. [pause] Notice how the ground holds all of you, without effort, without asking anything in return. [pause]

Now, somewhere nearby, you hear water. "He leadeth me beside the still waters." Rise in your imagination and follow the sound. [pause] You come to the edge of a quiet pool, fed by a slow stream. The surface is almost perfectly still — smooth as glass, catching the gold of the sky. [pause]

Sit down beside it. Look into the still water. There is no rush here, no churning, no rapids. Just stillness, deep and clear. [pause] Let your own thoughts grow as still as this water. When a worry ripples the surface, do not fight it. Watch it spread, and watch it fade, until the water is smooth again. [pause]

"He restoreth my soul." Feel that word — restored. As if something worn thin in you is being filled back up, slowly, by the quiet and the water and the One who led you here. [pause] Breathe it in. [pause] Let it out. [pause]

The path ahead may not always be easy. The psalm knows this. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." [pause] Whatever valley waits for you tomorrow, you do not enter it alone. There is a shepherd beside you with a rod to guard and a staff to guide. You are accompanied. [pause]

Now picture a table, set for you in the open. "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over." [pause] Even with your troubles in plain sight, you are provided for. Cared for. Anointed. Your cup is not half-empty — it is overflowing. Let that abundance rest on you for a moment. [pause]

And finally, the promise that closes the psalm. "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." [pause] Goodness and mercy are not ahead of you, demanding to be chased — they are behind you, following you home. [pause]

Rest here at the still waters a moment longer. Breathe slow. [pause] Let the gold light and the quiet water stay with you. [pause]

When you are ready, begin to return. Feel the room around you again. The surface beneath you. [pause] Take one full breath of your own. [pause] And gently open your eyes. The still waters are always there. You can come back whenever your soul needs restoring.

Sources

Scripture: Psalm 23, King James Version (Public Domain) — fetched via bible-api.com, translation_id "kjv", quoted exact.

Owens, M., Leivang, R., & Bunce, H.
