Your first month, week by week

Week 1

Start with just your eyes. On the next clear night, sit outside, let your eyes adjust to the dark for 20 minutes, and find the Moon and one bright planet. Download a free star app like Stellarium or SkyView and use it to name a few bright stars and constellations.

Week 2

  • Not letting your eyes dark-adapt. Your eyes need a full 20 to 30 minutes in darkness to see faint objects. One glance at a phone screen resets it, so use a dim red light and be patient.
  • Fighting heavy light pollution. Trying to observe faint objects under bright city lights leads to frustration. Start with the Moon and planets, which shine through anything, and seek out a darker spot when you can.

Words you'll hear

Magnitude
A measure of how bright an object appears. Lower numbers are brighter; the brightest stars are around magnitude 1, and the faintest your eyes can see is about magnitude 6.
Aperture
The diameter of a telescope's main lens or mirror. Bigger aperture gathers more light and shows fainter, more detailed objects; it matters far more than magnification.
Deep-sky object
Anything beyond our solar system, such as a galaxy, nebula, or star cluster. Through a backyard scope these usually appear as faint gray glows rather than colorful photos.
Light pollution
The glow from streetlights and cities that washes out faint stars. Darker skies reveal far more, though the Moon and planets shine through almost anywhere.
Conjunction
When two objects, such as two planets or a planet and the Moon, appear close together in the sky. These pairings make for easy, beautiful viewing.
Go-to mount
A computerized telescope mount that automatically points at and tracks objects you select from a hand controller or app, taking the guesswork out of finding things.
