1. Gather your supplies

  • A computer, laptop, or tablet
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A free or low-cost blogging platform such as WordPress
  • A topic or two you enjoy writing about

2. Your first project

Write and publish one short blog post, about 300 to 500 words, introducing yourself and the subject your blog will be about.

3. Your first month, step by step

  • Week 1: Decide what your blog will be about and who it is for. Pick one or two subjects you love and could happily write about for months. Watch the beginner videos and jot down ideas for your first ten posts.
  • Week 2: Choose a platform such as WordPress and set up your blog. Give it a simple name, pick a clean, easy-to-read theme, and enlarge the font if that is more comfortable. Do not fuss over the design just yet.
  • Week 3: Write and publish your first real post, just 300 to 500 words introducing yourself and your topic. Do not aim for perfect, aim for finished. Add one photo, read it aloud once, and hit publish.
  • Week 4: Write two more short posts and settle into a gentle rhythm, perhaps one a week. Share your posts with a few friends and family, and start a simple list of topic ideas so you never stare at a blank page.

4. Mistakes to avoid

  • Overthinking the design and colors instead of writing. A clean, simple theme is all you need to start.
  • Posting on and off with long gaps, so readers forget about you. Pick a gentle, realistic rhythm and keep to it.
  • Writing stiffly for search engines instead of writing warmly for real people. Write the way you would talk to a friend.
  • Giving up too early, before search engines and readers have had time to find you. Blogging rewards patience.
  • Starting with no clear topic, so the blog wanders and readers are not sure what it is about. Pick a focus.
  • Waiting for everything to be perfect before publishing. A finished, imperfect post always beats a perfect one you never post.
