Jewelry Making & Beading Starter Checklist
Everything you need to begin jewelry making & beading, on one page. Print it, check off each step, and enjoy the journey. Made for beginners over 50.
1. Gather your supplies
- Round-nose and chain-nose pliers plus wire cutters
- An assortment of beads (glass, gemstone, or acrylic)
- Beading wire or stretch cord, clasps, jump rings, and crimp beads
- A bead mat and good light to keep beads from rolling away
2. Your first project
String a simple stretch-cord beaded bracelet you can finish in one evening.
3. Your first month, step by step
- Week 1: Gather a basic tool set and a starter bead kit. Practice opening and closing jump rings and string a simple stretch-cord bracelet.
- Week 2: Learn to use beading wire and crimp beads. Make a necklace with a proper clasp for a clean, professional finish.
- Week 3: Make a pair of earrings using head pins and simple loops. Practice your wrapped loops until they feel natural.
- Week 4: Try a new technique that excites you, such as wire wrapping a pendant or basic bead weaving, and design a piece of your own.
4. Mistakes to avoid
- Buying too many supplies at once before you know what you enjoy making.
- Cutting beading wire too short, leaving no room to attach the clasp.
- Crimping in the wrong spot or too loosely, so the piece comes apart.
- Opening jump rings by pulling them apart sideways, which warps the ring.
- Working over a smooth table so beads roll away and get lost.
- Skipping the planning step and stringing beads before laying out the design.
5. Helpful gear to get you started
- Jewelry pliers set (round-nose, chain-nose, cutters)
- Beginner bead and findings starter kit
- Bead mat to keep beads in place
- Jewelry making starter kit
- Beading supplies (beads, cord, clasps)
