Iranian Ambassador Comments on World Cup Exit

Iran's ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, issued a statement after the country's national soccer team was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup. In his statement to POLITICO, Pasandideh praised the team's determination and criticized what he called 'pseudo-VAR' interventions, referring to the video review decisions that influenced the tournament's outcome. He argued that the team battled not only its opponents but also 'fatigue, injustice, and hardships' during the tournament.

Pasandideh compared the players to legendary Persian heroes, including Arash and Rostam, and said they had demonstrated a willingness to give 'the last drop of life for Iran.' He predicted that the national team would return 'stronger, more experienced, and more brilliant' in future international competitions. FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ambassador's statement.

The ambassador's comments came after Iran's exit from the World Cup, and he cast the team's run in patriotic terms, emphasizing the importance of loyalty to the flag. Addressing the players as the 'brave sons of Iran,' Pasandideh expressed his pride in their performance and perseverance throughout the tournament.
