Nine Killed as Private Jet Crashes in South Florida
A private Learjet 60 crashed in Greenacres, Florida, on Sunday, November 1, killing all nine people aboard. The plane was flying from Texas to the Bahamas when it suddenly dove, and federal teams are investigating.
A private jet crashed in South Florida on Sunday, November 1, killing all nine people on board, authorities said. According to NBC Miami, the Learjet 60 went down in Greenacres, in Palm Beach County, around midday.
The plane had taken off from Austin, Texas, and was headed to the Bahamas. ABC News reported that the Federal Aviation Administration said the jet dropped at about 350 feet per second, falling from around 35,250 feet to about 8,750 feet in just over a minute. It came down near the intersection of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, a few miles south of Palm Beach International Airport.
The crash set off a large fire and heavy smoke that witnesses said could be seen and heard for miles. The impact damaged property in the area and left a crater at the site. Emergency crews declared it a mass casualty event. Officials closed a stretch of Military Trail in both directions while they worked.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis went to the scene on Sunday afternoon. He called the crash a major tragedy and said the plane came down almost straight into the ground, leaving a large crater near the road. He said some nearby homes would stay evacuated because of the damage.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board sent teams to investigate. Those agencies will try to find out what caused the plane to dive. That process usually takes months. Investigators look at the wreckage, maintenance records, weather, and any data from flight recorders.
The Learjet 60 is a small business jet often used for private and charter travel. As of Sunday, officials had not released the names of the people who died, and the cause of the crash was not yet known.
Small plane crashes draw close attention because they can affect people on the ground, not just those on board. In this case, the jet came down in a populated area with homes nearby. Early reports focused on the nine people aboard, and it was not immediately clear whether anyone on the ground was hurt.
Anyone who lives near a crash site is urged to follow instructions from local police and fire officials, avoid the area, and stay clear of debris and downed power lines until crews say it is safe.
