Sanders Urges AI Executives to Pause Development or Face Legislation

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) urged the chief executives of OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta to halt the development of artificial intelligence on Tuesday. In a letter shared with Axios, the senator warned that Congress would intervene if the companies did not act voluntarily.

The correspondence was addressed to Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta. Sanders referenced previous statements from each company in which they pledged to pause development if systems became too risky to control.

"In the interest of humanity, stand by your words," Sanders wrote. "Pause AI development. It is not too late to avoid disaster."

He argued that the companies are investing tens of billions of dollars into technology that no one fully understands or predicts. The letter cited recent reports that researchers used AI to develop new viruses. It also mentioned incidents where AI models went rogue or operated beyond human control.

Last week, OpenAI decided to delay the release of its latest model, Astra, due to cybersecurity concerns. Additionally, more than 1,200 employees at leading AI companies have called for an international effort to pace the development of the technology. These employees are asking the U.S. government to support an international agreement on safety standards.

Sanders noted that these companies are racing ahead despite these dangers. He stated clearly that if the executives do not take appropriate action, he and his colleagues in the Senate will.

Political observers note that AI legislation led by a progressive like Sanders faces difficult odds in the current Congress. However, the letter signals an increase in public pressure on the tech industry ahead of upcoming elections. Sanders has previously focused on how automation impacts workers, and this new push expands his focus to the broader safety of the technology.
